Welcome to the webpage of ProStEUVa, the Jean Monnet Module of the Department of Law of the University of Pisa, on promoting and strengthening EU Values.
EU values and interests are narrowly intertwined because protecting, promoting and projecting EU values (art. 2 TEU) also encourages its citizens’ common and public good. Nonetheless, in recent times, many challenges are threatening the protection and promotion of EU values at internal and external levels: populisms and the spread of their narratives through the Internet and social media; the consequences of the pandemic in terms of digital authoritarianism, economic recession, poverty, sidelining of parliaments and courts in favour of governments; widespread scepticism on courts’ impartiality.
ProStEUVa aims to analyse the importance of disseminating EU values to counter democratic backsliding and build EU identity. From a bottom-up approach, it will explore how civil servants, court members, and schools can counter those challenges and will identify the communication strategies, methods, and practices that they can adopt to promote and disseminate EU values and stimulate a sense of European identity and belonging among citizens.
It will consist of teaching and research activities targeted to undergraduate, master and PhD students, scholars and civic society (civil servants of local government institutions, court members, representatives of schools), thus filling a gap in the law studies programs in Pisa.
